Review

I read this 3 years ago,and this is a super, illustrated book about a much-neglected period of German Naval History. The depth of research is very good, the illustrations are superb, including rare photographs of Wrecks of famous ships like "Scheer", I think it is an essential addition for anyone interested in German Naval History, or of World War Two.The companion to Hitlers Naval War by Cajus Beeker --By David I. Walker

This book is a brilliant account of the final year for the Kriegsmarine. It is the story of a doomed generation of sailors who bravely and hopelessly went to battle knowing that theirs was a hopeless cause. Tarrant (as usual) provides an interseting text, and keeps the book moving along. He gives you a good impression of the overwhelming force deployed by the Allies at the end of the Second World War. --By Michael Knight

what a book. read this and the other two books in the trilogy and you find it easy to understand how germany lost the war --By robert michael lowe

I loved reading this book. The author gives great detail on the actions of the German navy in the final year of the war. I've never found any other source that gives such detailed information on those activities. A lot of general books will almost stop covering the U-Boats after the large convoy battles of May 43 and will only cover the major surface units of the German navy.

For example, he gives an exceptional account of the activities of the minor surface units the German navy had in the Mediterranean.

I wish he would write such detail on the other years of the war. I would gladly buy those books and read them right away.

This book on the final year of the German Navy surprised me by how many things the Germans tried to reverse the course of the war at sea, and by how much effort they put into it. Although a basically hopeless endeavor, mostly due to the crushing material superiority owned by the Allies, the Germans had a few
potentially game-changing weapons (electric U-boats, for example) in development, but largely ran out of time to field them. This book gives an outstanding overview of the doomed last year of the Kriegsmarine. Highly recommended to military historians of the second world war at sea. Five stars.
