Around 1700N/29, the aircraft carrier HMS Eagle (Capt. E.G.N. Rushbrooke, DSC, RN) departed Freetown to patrol in the mid-Atlantic. She is escorted by the destroyer HMS Velox (Lt.Cdr. E.G. Roper, DSC, RN). (1)

Around 0900N/31, west of Dakar, in approximate position 14°45'N, 20°30'W, the aircraft carrier HMS Eagle (Capt. E.G.N. Rushbrooke, DSC, RN) and the destroyer HMS Velox (Lt.Cdr. E.G. Roper, DSC, RN) were joined by the light cruiser HMS Dunedin (Capt. R.S. Lovatt, RN). (2)

Between 0838N/5 and 1932N/5, HMS Eagle (Capt. E.G.N. Rushbrooke, DSC, RN) fuelled at sea from the RFA tanker Bishopdale (8406 GRT, built 1937). Position of the rendezvous was in approximately 25°00'N, 36°45'W. (3)

Around 0915N/4, HMS Eagle (Capt. E.G.N. Rushbrooke, DSC, RN) departed Freetown for St. Helena. She is escorted until 0600N/6 by the destroyers HMS Vansittart (Lt.Cdr. R.L.S. Gaisford, RN) and HMS Velox (Lt.Cdr. E.G. Roper, DSC, RN). (4)

Around 0915Z/8, HMS Eagle (Capt. E.G.N. Rushbrooke, DSC, RN) arrived at St. Helena from Freetown. (5)

28 Aug 1941 (position 0.00, 0.00)
HMS Eagle (Capt. E.G.N. Rushbrooke, DSC, RN) conducted flying exercises off Freetown during which she was escorted by HMS Mignonette (Lt. H.H. Brown, RNR). (6)

5 Sep 1941
Around 1200N/5, the aircraft carrier HMS Eagle (Capt. E.G.N. Rushbrooke, DSC, RN) and heavy cruiser HMS Dorsetshire (Capt. A.W.S. Agar, VC, DSO, RN) made rendezvous in position 07°16'N, 27°00'W, with the RFA oiler Echodale (8150 GRT, built 1941) and her escort the corvette HMS Calendula (Lt.Cdr. A.D. Bruford, RNVR).

HMS Eagle then attempted to fuel from the oiler but all attempts failed.

Attempts continued for the next few days and by 8 September HMS Eagle had finally been successfully refueled.

HMS Dorsetshire was refuelled on the 9th and the 10th after which the oiler and the corvette parted company. (7)

Around 0910Z/28, HMS Eagle (Capt. E.G.N. Rushbrooke, DSC, RN) and HMS Dorsetshire (Capt. A.W.S. Agar, VC, DSO, RN) departed St. Helena to resume their patrol and subsequent passage to Freetown. (8)

Around 0800A/21, HMS Eagle (Capt. E.G.N. Rushbrooke, DSC, RN) and HMS Argus (Capt. T.O. Bulteel, RN) departed Gibraltar for the U.K.

They were escorted by the destroyers HMS Foresight (Cdr. J.S.C. Salter, RN) HMS Forester (Lt.Cdr. E.B. Tancock, DSC and Bar, RN), HMS Fury (Lt.Cdr. T.C. Robinson, RN), HMS Sikh (Cdr. G.H. Stokes, DSC, RN), HMS Zulu (Cdr. H.R. Graham, DSO, DSC, RN), HMS Vidette (Lt.Cdr. E.N. Walmsley, RN) and the escort destroyer HMS Lamerton (Lt.Cdr. H.C. Simms, RN).

Around 1140A/21, HMS Vidette parted company.

Around 1400A/21, HMS Lamerton parted company.

Around 1725A/24 - 1735A/24, HMS Sikh and HMS Zulu were detached while HMS Harvester (Lt.Cdr. M. Thornton, DSC, RN) and HMS Havelock (Cdr. E.H. Thomas, DSC, RN) joined.

They all arrived at Greenock around 1130A/26. (9)

30 Oct 1941 (position 0.00, 0.00)
Around 1715A/30, HMS Eagle (Capt. E.G.N. Rushbrooke, DSC, RN) departed Greenock for Liverpool where she arrived around 1430A/31. She is escorted by ORP Burza (Kmdr.ppor. (Cdr.) Z.I. Wojewodzki).

HMS Eagle is to refit at the Cammell Laird shipyard at Birkenhead. (10)

HMS Eagle (Capt. E.G.N. Rushbrooke, DSC, RN) is docked in the Gladstone graving dock at Liverpool.

[She was undocked in December but as no log is available for this month the date is not known to us.] (11)

9 Jan 1942 (position 0.00, 0.00)
Around 1515A/9, HMS Eagle (Capt. E.G.N. Rushbrooke, DSC, RN) departed Liverpool for Greenock.

Around 1700A/9, when off the Bar lightvessel, the destroyers ORP Blyscawica (Kmdr.ppor. (Cdr.) W.R. Francki) and HMS Skate (Lt. F.P. Baker, DSC, RN) joined as escorts. (12)

10 Jan 1942 (position 0.00, 0.00)
Around 1000A/10, HMS Eagle (Capt. E.G.N. Rushbrooke, DSC, RN), ORP Blyscawica (Kmdr.ppor. (Cdr.) W.R. Francki) and HMS Skate (Lt. F.P. Baker, DSC, RN) arrived in the Clyde from Liverpool.

HMS Eagle then conducted D/G trials off Helensburg. She proceeded to Greenock on completion of these. (12)

During 15/16 January 1942, HMS Eagle (Capt. E.G.N. Rushbrooke, DSC, RN) conducted exercises in the Clyde area. These included night exercises. (12)
