fwiw: visiting the floating museums (for instance, USS Bowfin in Hawaii) and USS Pampanito in San Francisco) helps put the duty aboard these fleet boats into perspective when you reflect on the accomplishments of the Silent Service.
I would recommend this book to any one who wanted to learn what is was like serving on submarines during WWII.

his service as an officer on submarines Sculpin and Pintado. He was screwed by the Captain of the Pintado, 'Chick' Clarey. Admiral Lockwood wanted to take 'Mendy' off the Pintado to give him his own command of a sub, but Clarey begged Lockwood not to do it as he valued Mendy too highly as his XO to let him go--in short, Mendy made Clarey look good/feel safe so he stood in Mendy's way. Disgusting! Anyway, Mendenhall goes into detail about all eleven patrols he was on, each lasting, generally, 40 to 50 days, his fellow crew, ships sunk, other missions, shipboard training, and provides maps about each of the patrols, which is a GREAT feature. Even the missions, towards the end of the war, when targets are few and far between, still make great reading. After I finished it, I gave it to my 17 year old son, who said it was terrific !!
