I found this book difficult to put down. It reads like "Pacific War Diary" in that it provides an evolving picture of daily life aboard ship. Mendenhall manages to convey the early difficulties with a reluctant and cautious skipper, naval bureaucracy, accounts of all his patrols, shipboard humor, and personal insights. Unlike the aggressive boats such as Wahoo, Tang, Bowfin and others, Mendenhall's service aboard Sculpin and Pintado were probably more typical of sub duty in the Pacific, which was hardly typical of navy duty in general. I wasn't there, so I can't say what this era was like for our sailors, but I certainly enjoy reading about this time and space, and very much enjoyed this book. The author has a smooth and easy style, there is no wandering off his subject, and someone did a fine job editing (grammar, spelling, etc). If you enjoy reading about the Silent Service, this is a good addition to your war library.

fwiw: visiting the floating museums (for instance, USS Bowfin in Hawaii) and USS Pampanito in San Francisco) helps put the duty aboard these fleet boats into perspective when you reflect on the accomplishments of the Silent Service.

I gave this copy to one of the surviving crew member of the submarine Pintado. Mendenhall was the executive officer on that sub and he described their dangerous missions with simplicity and clarity. Almost 25% of the submariners were lost. That's higher than any other segment of the military during WW 2. If you see a vet, especially a WW 2 vet, stop and give them a hug!

A good picture of life on a WW2 submarine in combat. I have read better descriptions of life, experiences, and emotions on a submarine in WW2, for example the books by Beach, but this was worth while and I thoroughly enjoyed it. For those with an interest in WW2 submarines and their actions, I would recommend this book.

This is a very good historical book about submarine duty during WWII. Being a former submariner I could relate to much of the things described in the book. Most sub sailors that served on diesel boats can relate to much of what is in this book. I served on both diesel and nuclear boats and my best memories are related to the diesel boats.
I would recommend this book to any one who wanted to learn what is was like serving on submarines during WWII.

Quite accurate but not to be read for pure enjoyment.

The author kept a diary while serving in the Pacific theatre during WW2 on SS Sculpin and Pintado. He recounts the wild scary times and the quiet and funny moments of submarine duty during war. He was a junior officer for 6 war patrols on Sculpin and the Executive officer (2nd in command) for 5 patrols on Pintado.

Big Mac of Ann Arbor
5.0 out of 5 stars One of the BEST memoirs by a WWII Submariner! Required reading for WWII buffs.

Admiral Corwin Mendenhall ( 1916-2006) was an authetic American HERO, and in this book he spells out
his service as an officer on submarines Sculpin and Pintado. He was screwed by the Captain of the Pintado, 'Chick' Clarey. Admiral Lockwood wanted to take 'Mendy' off the Pintado to give him his own command of a sub, but Clarey begged Lockwood not to do it as he valued Mendy too highly as his XO to let him go--in short, Mendy made Clarey look good/feel safe so he stood in Mendy's way. Disgusting! Anyway, Mendenhall goes into detail about all eleven patrols he was on, each lasting, generally, 40 to 50 days, his fellow crew, ships sunk, other missions, shipboard training, and provides maps about each of the patrols, which is a GREAT feature. Even the missions, towards the end of the war, when targets are few and far between, still make great reading. After I finished it, I gave it to my 17 year old son, who said it was terrific !!
