For much of World War II, Germany's most threatening maritime force was the U-boat arm. Their deadly attacks on Allied supply lines are well documented, but they also carried out numerous clandestine operations, landing in neutral countries such as Ireland and Spain, and along the U.S. and Canadian shorelines to conduct espionage and sabotage. North African landings aided Rommel's Afrika Korps. In this fascinating book, U-boat historian Jak Mallmann-Showell has gathered together a collection of firsthand accounts and remarkable photographs--many of them previously unpublished--showing how these landings were executed. This fresh perspective on the Kriegsmarine and their world-wide exploits between 1939 and 1945 will be a welcome acquisition for anyone interested in the naval campaigns of World War II.

Good overall.

4.0 out of 5 stars A very useful catalogue of non-conventional U-boat activities.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 23, 2014
U-boats engaged in a number of clandestine activities, such as landing agents in the USA, surprise shore bombardments of oil installations in the Caribbean, illegal refuelling in neutral ports, setting up weather stations in Greenland and Canada, etc., etc. These often escape notice in U-boat studies devoted to their primary ship-sinking activities. Using original U-boat archives and crew interviews, this book gives a good overall picture of these secondary operations.

The Allies feared and believed in far more widespread nefarious U-boat activities of this sort and this has filtered down to today as various unlikely and usupported U-boat "sightings" from as far afield as Chile. This book is a valuable corrective to the wider conspiracy theories involving U-boats as it puts their secondary activities in proper perspective.

Recommended.
