HMCS Trail (T/A/Lt.Cdr. G.S. Hall, RCNR) picks up survivors from the American passenger ship Chatham that was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine U-517 in the Belle Isle Strait in position 51º53'N, 55º48'W.

3 Sep 1942
HMCS Shawinigan (T/A/Lt.Cdr. C.P. Balfry, RCNR) and HMCS Trail (T/A/Lt.Cdr. G.S. Hall, RCNR) together pick up 17 survivors from the Canadian merchant Donald Stewart that was torpedoed and sunk north-east of Cape Whittle in the Gulf of St.Lawrence in position 50º32'N, 58º46'W by the German submarine U-517.
