The light cruiser HMS Dunedin (Capt. C.E. Lambe, CVO, RN) and destroyer HMCS Assiniboine (Cdr. E. Mainguy, RCN) departed Kingston to patrol the Mona Passage to search for German merchant vessels trying to return to Germany from Aruba, Netherlands West Indies.

Due to mechanical difficulties HMS Dunedin had to reduce speed to effect repairs so at 1700 hours, HMCS Assiniboine was sent ahead to the Mona Passage. (6)

2 Mar 1940
The British light cruiser HMS Dunedin (Capt. C.E. Lambe, CVO, RN) intercepted the German merchant Heidelberg (6530 GRT, built 1925) south-east of Santa Domingo in position 17°52'N, 69°36'W. However before the German ship can be captured she is scuttled by her own crew which was then picked up by the cruiser.

HMS Dunedin (Capt. C.E. Lambe, CVO, RN) departed Kingston to patrol in / off the Mona Passage. This was later changed to patrol to the north-east of Curacao as two German ships had departed from there during the night of 4/5 March 1940. (6)

5 Mar 1940
After sunset, HMS Dunedin (Capt. C.E. Lambe, CVO, RN) and HMCS Assiniboine (Cdr. E. Mainguy, RCN), were ordered to patrol the Mona Passage between Cape Engano and Aguadilla Bay. (6)

8 Mar 1940
At abour 0530Z/8, HMS Dunedin (Capt. C.E. Lambe, CVO, RN), intercepted the German merchant vessel Hannover (5537 GRT, built 1939) about 10 miles from Cape Engano, Santa Domingo. Attempts were made by the German crew to scuttle the ship but the fire could be got under control by the British. The German vessel was taken in tow as all auxliary machinery had been wrecked.

Eleven officers and forty-two men were taken prisoner, but one boat containing seven officers and thirty men managed to escape in the darkness to Santa Domingo.

Course was then set for Kingston. HMCS Assiniboine (Cdr. E. Mainguy, RCN) was in company but she was detached on the 9th to return to the Mona Passage.

The Hannover later became the first British escort carrier, British escort carrier HMS Audacity.

She arrived with condenser trouble for which she was taken in hand for repairs. (1)

The following day she reported again to have suffered condenser trouble. (6)

HMS Dunedin (Capt. C.E. Lambe, CVO, RN) is ordered to patrol near Trinidad to to guard the liner Queen Mary (British, 81235 GRT, built 1936) which was passing through the area and was to have a brief stay at Trinidad the following day. (6)
