He entered naval service in April 1916 served in: HMS Defiance, HMS Jeanette 2, HMS Cormorant, HMS Victory, HMS Research, HMS Burslem, HM Yacht Zaria, HM Trawler Larne and HM Trawler Duchess of Buccleuch, demobbed in February 1920.

Re-entered in 1940 served in HMS Osprey, Claverhouse, Greenfly, Bacchante, St Kenan, Primrose, Victory, Pembroke, Baldur, Drake, Vetch, President, Eaglet, Bideford, Odyssey, Teigh, Osborne, Braganza, Sultan, and Terror.

HMS St. Kenan (T/Lt. H.J. Beverley, RNR) picks up nine survivors from the Swedish merchant Nils Gorthon that was torpedoed and sunk by German U-boat U-60 about 25 nautical miles north-north-east of Malin Head in position 55°45'N, 07°05'W.
