German U-boat U-45 was sunk south-west of Ireland, in position 50°58'N, 12°57'W, by depth charges from the British destroyers HMS Inglefield (Capt. A.G. Talbot, RN), HMS Ivanhoe (Cdr. B. Jones, RN), HMS Intrepid (Cdr. J.W. Josselyn, RN) and HMS Icarus (Lt.Cdr. C.D. Maud, RN).

Around 1400A/19, the aircraft carrier HMS Furious (Capt. A.G. Talbot, DSO, RN) and the destroyers HMS Beverley (Cdr.(Retd.) E.F. Fitzgerald, RN) departed Liverpool to join convoy WS 5A.

Shortly after departure they joined the troop transport Rangitiki (British, 16698 GRT, built 1929) and the destroyer HMS Kipling (Cdr. A. St. Clair-Ford, RN) coming from Avonmouth.

Around 2200A/19, the destroyer HMS Kelvin (Cdr. J.H. Allison, DSO, RN) joined.

Around 1430A/28, the aircraft carrier HMS Furious (Capt. A.G. Talbot, DSO, RN) and the destroyers HMS Faulknor (Capt. A.F. de Salis, RN) and HMS Firedrake (Lt.Cdr. S.H. Norris, DSO, DSC, RN) arrived at Gibraltar. (2)

Around 0830N/6, the aircraft carrier HMS Furious (Capt. A.G. Talbot, DSO, RN), light cruiser HMS Delhi (Capt. A.S. Russell, RN) and the destroyers HMS Isis (Cdr. C.S.B. Swinley, DSC, RN) and HMS Encounter (Lt.Cdr. E.V.St.J. Morgan, RN) departed Freetown for Takoradi.

The light cruiser HMS Neptune (Capt. R.C. O'Conor, RN) was to join later at sea. (3)

HMS Furious (Capt. A.G. Talbot, DSO, RN) arrived at Belfast from Gibraltar. At Belfast she is taken in hand for a short refit. (4)

During the night of 15/16 April 1941, the Luftwaffe attacked Belfast with around 150 bombers. The aircraft carrier HMS Furious (Capt. A.G. Talbot, DSO, RN), refitting at Belfast, was damaged by German bombs. She was straddled by a stick of four bombs while berthed at Victoria Wharf. Damage to the structure was however slight.

5 May 1941
Around 0040B/5, HMS Furious (Capt. A.G. Talbot, DSO, RN), which is undergoing a short refit at the Harland & Wolff shipyard at Belfast, is hit by a small bomb during a German air raid. The bomb exploded in the lower hangar but did not penetrate the ships armoured deck. Also a near miss caused some minor damage to a funnel duct.

Around 2100A/5, HMS Furious departed Belfast of Liverpool where she arrived around 2125A/6.

At Liverpool she was to embark aircraft. (5)

Around 1400A/11, the aircraft carrier HMS Furious (Capt. A.G. Talbot, DSO, RN) departed Liverpool for Greenock where she arrived around 0115A/12. She had been escorted by the destroyer HMS Winchelsea (Lt.Cdr. W.A.F. Hawkins, OBE, DSC, RN). (5)

Around 1700A/10, the aircraft carrier HMS Furious (Capt. A.G. Talbot, DSO, RN) and the light cruiser HMS Sheffield (Capt. C.A.A. Larcom, RN) joined the aircraft carrier HMS Argus (Capt. T.O. Bulteel, RN) and the troop transport Nea Hellas (British, 16991 GRT, built 1922).

Around 2355A/10, HMS Sheffield parted company with the carriers and the troop transport.

Around 1145B/11, HMS Furious, HMS Argus and the Nea Hellas were joined by the destroyers HMS Cossack (Capt. P.L. Vian, DSO and Bar, RN), HMS Maori (Cdr. R.E. Courage, DSO, DSC and Bar, RN) and HMS Sikh (Cdr. G.H. Stokes, RN).

Around 2200B/11, the destroyers HMS Vanquisher (Cdr. N.V. Dickinson, DSC, RN), HMS Winchelsea (Lt.Cdr. W.A.F. Hawkins, OBE, DSC, RN) joined.

Around 2200B/13, HMS Winchelsea parted company to proceed to Londonderry arriving there on the 14th.

Around 0600B/14, HMS Furious, HMS Argus, HMS Cossack, HMS Maori and HMS Sikh arrived at Greenock.

HMS Vanquisher continued on to Liverpool arriving there later on the 14th. (6)

Around 0800B/20, HMS Furious (Capt. A.G. Talbot, DSO, RN) departed Lamlash for Scapa Flow. She was escorted by the destroyers ORP Garland (Kmdr.ppor. (Cdr.) K.F. Namiesniowski), HMS Castleton (Cdr.(Retd.) F.H.E. Skyrme, RN) and HMS Charlestown (Lt.Cdr. T. Johnston, RN).

They arrived at Scapa Flow around 1900B/21 after flying exercises had been carried out in the Pentland Firth. (7)

The aircraft carrier HMS Furious (Capt. A.G. Talbot, DSO, RN) conducted flying exercises off Scapa Flow. She was, most likely, escorted by the destroyers HMS Intrepid (Cdr. R.C. Gordon, DSO, RN), HMS Castleton (Cdr.(Retd.) F.H.E. Skyrme, RN) and HMS Charlestown (Lt.Cdr. T. Johnston, RN). (7)

Around 0545A/21, the aircraft carrier HMS Furious (Capt. A.G. Talbot, DSO, RN) departed Scapa Flow for Greenock. She was escorted by the destroyers HMS Somali (Capt. D.K. Bain, RN) and HMS Oribi (Lt.Cdr. J.E.H. McBeath, DSO, RN).

HMS Furious and HMS Oribi arrived at Greenock around 0300A/22. HMS Oribi later went to Glasgow for post work-up repairs.

HMS Somali returned to Scapa Flow where she arrived around 0700A/23. (9)

Around 2215A/18, the aircraft carrier HMS Furious (Capt. A.G. Talbot, DSO, RN) departed Gibraltar for Bermuda. She was escorted by the destroyers HMS Foresight (Cdr. J.S.C. Salter, RN), HMS Forester (Lt.Cdr. E.B. Tancock, DSC and Bar, RN), HMS Fury (Lt.Cdr. T.C. Robinson, RN) and HMS Legion (Cdr. R.F. Jessel, RN).

These destroyers were to join convoy WS 11X and HMS Furious was to provide cover for this convoy briefly before continuing her passage to Bermuda.

Around 2045A/18, HMS Fury parted company.

Around 0130A/19, the remaining destroyers parted company.

German U-boat U-331 was sunk in the Mediterranean north of Algiers in position 37°05'N, 02°27'E after she had been badly damaged by a Hudson aircraft she signalled surrender to a seaplane but was attacked by a torpedo-equipped aircraft Albacore from the British aircraft carrier HMS Formidable (Squadrons 500 and 820).
