The USS Chicago (i) has a particular connection to the city of Sydney, Australia. Chicago was moored in Sydney Harbour on the night of 31 May 1942 and was attacked by a Japanese midget submarine (one of three)launched the previous day. The Chicago fired on the midget submarine and then survived a torpedo attack from the submarine that sank and destroyed another allied ship killing 19 people.
