Escort destroyer HMS Hambledon (L 37)
7 Oct 1940
HMS Hambledon (Cdr. S.H. Carlill, RN) hit an acoustic mine in the English Channel off South Foreland in position 51º08'N, 01º21'E during operation Lucid, a planned raid with numerous incendiary vessels, gunboats, MTBs, minesweepers and other escort destroyers on the German invasion fleets assembled in the French channel ports. She was severely damaged. Repairs were completed in mid-May 1941.
Escort destroyer HMS Farndale (L 70)

Just after 2100 hours the British armed boarding vessel HMS Chakdina, serving as transport ship, was torpedoed and sunk by Italian aircraft about 30 nautical miles east-north-east of Tobruk, Libya in position 32º11'N, 24º30'E. Some of the survivors were picked up by the British escort destroyer HMS Farndale (Cdr. S.H. Carlill, RN) and landed at Alexandria on the 7th.

The Italian submarine Ammiraglio Caracciolo was sunk about 30 nautical miles north-north-east of Bardia in position 32º09'N, 25º19'E by HMS Fandale (Cdr. S.H. Carlill, RN).
9 Feb 1942
While escorting Convoy AT-27 from Alexandria to Toburk, HMS Farndale (Cdr. S.H. Carlill, RN) was heavily damaged in a German air attack off Mersa Matruh, Egypt. The ship was hit by a bomb just forward of the bridge. The bomb went through the Commanding Officers cabin down to the stewards accomodation and out through the ships side, where it exploded, damaging the ships side. The asdic compartment was flooded as were both engine rooms, the ship started to go down rapidly by the bows. The Commanding Officer ordered abandon ship but this was recalled as the ship settled. Farndale was taken in tow by AT-27's other escort the British corvette HMS Gloxinia (Lt.Cdr. A.J.C. Pomeroy, RNVR). Farndale arrived back at Alexandria on the 11th. Damage was severe and the ship was sent back home for repairs.
