Around 2300 hours Allen M. Sumner is lighly damaged when she is near missed by a bomb dropped by a Japanese aircraft.

In Ormoc Bay USS Allen M. Sumner (Cdr Norman John Sampson), USS Moale (Cdr Walter Manly Foster) and USS Cooper (Cdr Mell Andrew Peterson,jr.) battle with the Japanese escort destroyers Kuwa and Take (both offsite links). During this battle USS Cooper sinks the Kuwa in position 10º50'N, 124º35'E with gunfire but Cooper herself is sunk in position 10°54'N, 124°36'E by a torpedo from Take. Moale is damaged by gunfire during this action as is the Japanese Take.
Around 0145 hours the two remaining US destroyers retired from Ormoc Bay bound for San Pedro Bay where they arrived later that day.

USS Allen M. Sumner (Cdr. Norman John Sampson) arrives at Lingayen Gulf. Later this day Allen M. Sumner is hit by a Japanese kamikaze aircraft in position 16º40'N, 120º10'E. The plane hit near the after torpedo mount killing 14 men and injuring 19. Despite the damage done Allen. M. Sumner remained in action in the area until 14 January when she departed bound for the United States west coast for repairs.
