The German submarine U-731 was sunk in the mid-Atlantic near Tangier, in position 35º54'N, 05º45'W, by depth charges from the British patrol vessel HMS Kilmarnock (T/A/Lt.Cdr. K.B. Brown, RNVR), the British anti-submarine trawler HMS Blackfly (T/A/Lt.Cdr. A.P. Hughes, DSC, RNR) and 2 US Catalina aircraft (VP-63/P-12/P-1).
