| Notes on loss | At 06.54 hours on 23 Jun, 1941, the M-78 (SrLt Dimitriy L. Shevchenko) was hit by two torpedoes from U-144 and sank immediately west of Widawa. The commander of the 4th Submarine-Division, Klt S.I. Matveev, was lost with the submarine. They had left Liepaja the day before together with M-77 and had been attacked at 03.36 hours on 23 June off Uzava by German aircraft. This was the first success of an U-boat in the Baltic Sea in World War 2. | ||
