Notes on loss At 20.33 hours on 2 Dec, 1941, the Fjord (Master Halfdan Tønder) was torpedoed by U-557 off Estepona Point, Spain. She sank so quickly that the crew had to jump overboard. The Norwegian master, 10 other Norwegians, one Estonia, one British and one Canadian died. The 22 survivors rescued themselves on two rafts, which floated free when the ship sank and reached land at Estepona.
The Allied consulates got busy investigating the case, as it was obvious the U-boat had been within the neutral Spanish territorial waters at the time.

* Estimated position shown here is based on positions of losses in a roughly the same German grid code. It may be a bit off but should give a good idea as to where the attack took place.
