| Notes on loss | At 06.15 hours on 19 Dec, 1941, U-108 fired a spread of two torpedoes at the convoy HG-76 west of Lisbon, observed a flash on one ship and a large column of black smoke and heard two detonations. Scholtz reported two ships of 5000 grt each sunk, but only the Ruckinge (Master Walter Albert Ross) was damaged and later shelled and sunk by HMS Samphire (K 128) (LtCdr F.T. Renay). Three crew members were lost. The master, chief officer and 12 crew members were picked up by HMS Stork (L 81) (Cdr Frederic John Walker CB DSO DSC) and landed at Devonport. 18 crew members, three passengers (DBS) and four gunners were picked up by the American steam merchant Finland. | ||
