Notes on loss At 23.35 hours on 24 Sep, 1942, U-561 sank the Sphinx with 22 rounds of gunfire 36 miles southwest of Tiros, Lebanon.

The U-boat had already sunk an unknown topsail schooner at 00.02 hours on 21 September with 29 rounds of gunfire in grid CP 3479 after a torpedo had missed at 23.51 hours.
