History
Notes on loss At 07.57 hours on 8 Feb, 1943, U-521 fired a torpedo spread at the convoy Gibr-2 and observed two columns of fire on a tanker, which sank in two minutes. Bargsten claimed one tanker and one corvette sunk and another ship damaged. In fact, only HMS Bredon (T 223) (T/Lt J.R. Fradgley, RNVR) was hit by the spread and sank immediately off the Canary Islands. The commander, two officers and 40 ratings were lost.
