At 03.12 hours on 23 Feb 1943, U-604 fired a spread of four torpedoes at the Stockport (Master Thomas Ernest Fea, OBE) and scored two hits that caused the ship to sink within three minutes east of Cape Race. The rescue ship fell behind convoy ON-166 when picking up the survivors from Empire Trader on 22 February. After transferring the men to HMCS Dauphin (K 157) (T/Lt M.H. Wallace, RCNR), she tried to rejoin convoy but was torpedoed and lost with all hands.
