Notes on loss On 4 Mar, 1943, the unescorted California Star (Master Sydney Foulkes) was torpedoed and sunk by U-515 northwest of the Azores. 40 crew members, eight gunners and four passengers were lost. The master, 18 crew members and three passengers landed at Flores, Azores.
