| Notes on loss | At 19.06 hours on 9 Feb, 1944, the unescorted Viva (Master Oscar Andersen) was hit on the starboard side in the deep tank by one torpedo from U-188. The crew stopped the engines and abandoned ship in three lifeboats because the starboard motor boat was destroyed by the explosion. The ship developed a heavy list to starboard, but remained afloat and had to be sunk by a coup de grâce at 19.41 hours. The ship was hit on the port side aft and sank within 7 minutes after a boiler explosion. In the morning of 11 February, the survivors were picked up by the Marwarri (Master Armstrong) in 13°00N/55°20E and landed at Aden three days later. | ||
