Notes on loss

At 08.19 hours on 1 Sep, 1944, U-482 fired a Gnat at a group of corvettes and hit HMS Hurst Castle (K 416) (Lt H.G. Chesterman, DSC and Bar, RNR) after three minutes, causing her to sink fast north of Tory Island, Donegal. The corvette was part of the Escort Group B1 which was searching the area for the U-boat that had attacked the convoy CU-36 on 30 August. The survivors were picked up by HMS Ambuscade (D 38) (Lt J. Mayling, RN), while the U-boat was hunted unsuccessfully by the remaining warships for more than 12 hours.

Revisions December 2009 by Rainer:
Rohwer listed this ship as being part of the escort of convoy CU-36, but the EG B1 was just searching the area where the U-boat attack on the convoy had taken place two days earlier.

Thanks to Theron P. Snell for assistance.
