Notes on loss At 02.48 hours on 24 Jun, 1940, U-47 opened fire with the deck gun at the unescorted Cathrine in heavy seas after two torpedoes had missed the vessel at 02.18 and 02.41 hours. They fired 113 rounds and scored 12 hits that caused the ship to sink after 52 minutes. The crew abandoned ship in one lifeboat, were questioned by the Germans and provided with food and two bottles of red wine. The survivors were rescued and landed at Milford Haven.
