History

built as Fageraas, 1927 renamed Grong, 1933 renamed Snar

In September 1940, the Snar survived the convoy battle around HX-72.

After the war, the Snar was laid up at Haugesund on 21 Jan, 1958. In May 1963, sold to Brødrene Anda, Stavanger and was converted to the barge Rans. She was used as grain storage until 1976 and was then broken up.

Notes on loss

At 19.00 hours on 9 Nov, 1939, the neutral Snar was stopped off Southern Norway by U-34, but high seas prevented an inspection and she was ordered to stood by until the weather improved. The U-boat stopped the next morning two other ships, the Danish steam merchant N.J. Ohlsen and the Norwegian Gimle, which were both allowed to continue.
At 14.00 hours on 10 November, the Snar was searched and taken as prize because she was bound for France. A prize crew, lead by the 1. WO Oblt. Prellberg brought her to Friedrichsort, Germany. Apparently she was released shortly afterwards because the ship operated under Allied control the rest of the war.

* Estimated position shown here is based on positions of losses in a roughly the same German grid code. It may be a bit off but should give a good idea as to where the attack took place.
