Personal information

Fighter pilot in 804 Squadron FAA. When Michael E. was torpedoed, he and a fellow officer tore off the Royal Navy insignia off their lapels, as they did not want to risk being POWs or worse. Edward then went to the mess and grabbed two bottles of whisky which he put in his coat pockets. This was lucky for the occupants in his lifeboat as their ration lockers had been depleted, presumably while in dock and the whisky sustained them while waiting for rescue. According to him, the U-boat commander promised to radio their position in the clear once the U-boat was in a safe distance.
