Notes on event

At 13.50 hours on 11 Sep 1939 the unescorted Inverliffey (Master William Trowsdale) was stopped by a shot across her bow by U-38 and sunk by a torpedo southwest of the Scilly Isles. The master and 48 crew members were picked up by the American steam tanker R.G. Stewart, transferred to the American steam merchant City of Joliet and landed at Milford Haven. The neutral tanker had been stopped earlier by U-38 by a shot across her bow 253 miles west of Ushant (48°17N/11°16W) but was allowed to continue after an examination.
