Notes on event

At 23.00 hours on 22 Sep 1939 the Martti-Ragnar (Master J. Soderblom) was stopped by U-4 about 15 miles east of Arendal and searched. The boarding party ignited three scuttling charges at 00.15 hours on 23 September, because the ship carried contraband and the vessel sank after two hours. The crew had abandoned ship in two lifeboats, which were towed by the U-boat towards the coast. The men were picked up by two fishing boats and landed at Arendal at 07.30 hours.
