At 06.54 hours on 23 Jun, 1941, M-78 (SrLt Dmitriy L. Shevchenko) was hit by two torpedoes from U-144 and sank immediately 9 miles west of Vindava. The commander of the 4th Submarine-Division, Klt Matveev Stepan Ionovich, was lost with the submarine. They had left Liepaja the day before together with M-77, had been attacked at 03.36 hours on 23 June off Uzava by German aircraft and were proceeding on the surface to recharge their batteries.

This was the first success of an U-boat in the Baltic Sea and the first loss of a Soviet submarine in World War 2.
