History
Notes on loss At 02.10 hours on 26 Sep, 1941, U-124 attacked the convoy HG-73 north-northeast of the Azores and sank the Petrel at 02.32 hours with a first torpedo and two minutes later the Lapwing with a second torpedo, before escaping into a rain squall after flares illuminated the U-boat.

The Lapwing (Master Thomas James Hyam) was hit by the torpedo amidships and sank fast over the bow. The master, 20 crew members and five gunners were lost. Eight crew members together with the nine survivors from Petrel landed at Slyne Bay, Co. Galway on 9 October.
