| Notes on loss | At 02.19 hours on 25 Feb, 1942, the unescorted La Carriere (Master Robert Hyde Cairns) was hit by two G7a torpedoes from U-156 about 70 miles south by west of Guanica, Puerto Rico. The tanker stopped but continued after 10 minutes, evading two G7a torpedoes and firing with the deck gun at the surfaced U-boat. Hartenstein managed to hit the ship with his last torpedo at 06.21 hours, which caused her to sink after a short time. Eleven crew members and all four gunners were lost. The master and four crew members were picked up by an US Coast Guard cutter and landed at Trinidad. 21 crew members landed at Guanica the same day. | ||
