Notes on event

At 19.45 hours on 29 April 1942 the Alliance struck a mine laid on 13 April by U-562 off Famagusta and sank shortly afterwards. The master and two firemen were lost. The tug had been sent out in an emergency to tow in the disabled schooner Terpsithea, which also sank close inshore in an attempt to beach the vessel. On 20 April, four mines had been swept by the British M/S trawlers HMS Cordelia and HMS Lord Irwin (FY 1617) and a search after the tug convoy had been mined revealed no other mines.
