| Notes on loss | At 07.37 hours on 30 Apr, 1942, the unescorted Taborfjell (Master Erling Nilsen) was hit by two torpedoes from U-576 about 95 miles east of Cape Cod and caused the ship to sink within one minute. The ship sank so quickly that no lifeboats could be launched and the three survivors had all jumped overboard and rescued themselves on a raft. They observed how the U-boat passed them without taking any action and had seen three other survivors but they later disappeared. After 20 hours, the survivors were picked up by HMS P-552 (P 552) and landed at St. Johns on 7 May. | ||
