History
Notes on loss At 02.55 hours on 2 Jun, 1942, the unescorted Triton (Master B. van Dijk) was shelled by U-558 after being illuminated by a flare about 470 miles southeast of Bermuda. The ship tried to escape westwards at full speed and returned fire, but had to stop 20 minutes later after several shells had hit, causing heavy damage and killing five crewmen. The survivors abandoned ship on order of the master in three lifeboats because one port boat had been destroyed. At 04.00 hours, the burning ship capsized and sank and 10 minutes later the U-boat surfaced and questioned the survivors. Krech agreed that they searched for other survivors and gave them the best course to Bermuda or Puerto Rico. Eight survivors were wounded and one of them died later. The master, 28 crew members and one passenger were picked up after three days by the American steam merchant Mormack Port and landed at New York on 9 June.
