| History | Completed in February 1939 On 7 Sep, 1940, the Abbekerk was bombed and sunk during a German air raid on London. The ship was later raised, repaired and returned to service in March 1941. | ||
| Notes on loss | At 04.48 hours on 25 Aug, 1942, the unescorted Abbekerk (Master C. Wijker) was hit on the starboard side by one of three torpedos from U-604, which had been chasing the ship since more than 10 hours. After 11 minutes, a coup de grâce hit and the crew abandoned ship in two lifeboats exept the first mate and a cook. The survivors set sail for Ireland and were picked up three days later by HMS Wallflower (K 44) (Lt G.R. Greaves, RNR), which was escorting the convoy ON-122. The corvette distributed the men on several ships in the convoy, 18 of them were transferred to the Dutch steam merchant Jan van Goyen. | ||
