History

The Olaf Fostenes was used pre-war as fruit carrier between Europe and Gabon/Kamerun.

On 31 Aug, 1940, the Olaf Fostenes (Master Valvatne) rescued 251 survivors from the Volendam, which had been torpedoed by U-60 (Schnee). Many of the survivors were women and children being evacuated to Canada, they were landed at Greenock on 1 September.

Notes on loss At 09.21 hours on 18 Sep, 1942, the unescorted Olaf Fostenes (Master Axel Lindahl) was hit by one torpedo from U-380 on her starboard side and sank after being hit by a coup de grâce at 11.20 hours. The master and 35 crew members abandoned ship in two lifeboats and set sail for Newfoundland. On 26 September they were spotted by an aircraft and shortly thereafter rescued by a British destroyer en route to St. Johns.
