Notes on loss At 22.02 hours on 8 Oct, 1942, the unescorted Sarthe (Master Charles Ernest Mason) was hit amidships by one torpedo from U-68 southwest of the Cape of Good Hope. The ship broke in two and sank quickly after being hit under the bridge by a coup de grâce at 22.39 hours. The master, 48 crew members and eight gunners were picked up the next day by the South African whaler HMSAS Vereeniging (T 62) and landed at Simonstown.
