Notes on loss At 03.54 hours on 18 Feb, 1940, HMS Daring (H 16) (Cdr S.A. Cooper, RN), escorting the convoy HN-12, was hit by two torpedoes from U-23 about 40 miles east of the Pentland Firth and sank immediately. The commander and 156 crew members were lost.
