| Notes on loss | About 11.20 hours on 16 Mar, 1943, U-77 fired torpedoes at the convoy ET-14 northwest of Oran and hit the Hadleigh and Merchant Prince. Two crew members from the Hadleigh (Master William Henry Gould) were lost. The master, 41 crew members and eight gunners abandoned the vessel and were picked up by the HMS Tynedale (L 96) (Lt A.S. Courbould). The next day, the vessel was towed to Oran by the British tug HMS Restive (W 39), then to Mers el Kebir, where she was beached and later declared a total loss after the vessel broke in two. | ||
