History On 18 Jan, 1943, the Algeria was bombed by a British aircraft, while in a German convoy off Den Helder. She was taken in tow, but had to be abandoned after five hours, because she broke in two and sank 11 miles southwest of Terschelling. Two of the 21 crew members died. The survivors were rescued, brought to Den Helder and returned later via Sassnitz to Sweden.
Notes on loss At 06.10 hours on 27 Sep, 1939, the Algeria was stopped by U-36 20 miles west of Skudesnaes and was sent to Kiel as prize, arriving on 4 October. Three days later, ship and cargo were released by the Germans.
