Notes on loss

At 04.19 hours on 24 Feb, 1941, the Waynegate (Master Sydney Gray Larard), dispersed from convoy OB-288, was hit in a forward hold by one torpedo from U-73 south of Iceland. The U-boat had spotted two ships from the recently dispersed convoy and at 03.51 hours fired one torpedo at the second ship, but it was a dud and attacked the same ship again. At 04.38 hours, she was hit forward by one G7e coup de grâce and sank by the bow within five minutes. The master, 41 crew members and two gunners abandoned ship after the first hit, were picked up by FFL Léopard and landed at Greenock on 28 February.
