| Notes on loss | At 11.19 hours on 24 Oct, 1939, the Tafna (Master Royal Cecil Newlands) was hit by one torpedo from U-37 and sank 84 miles west of Gibraltar. The U-boat fired from a distance of 3500 metres due to an aircraft over the steamer and did not wait for the ship to sink because a warship arrived at the scene. Two crew members were lost. The master and 30 crew members were picked up by HMS Keppel (D 84) (Capt F.S.W. de Winton) and landed at Gibraltar. | ||
