| History | Completed in April 1922 In October 1940, the Bengore Head rescued 16 survivors from the Benlawers, which had been torpedoed and sunk by U-123 (Moehle) on 6 October. | ||
| Notes on loss | At 11.58 hours on 9 May 1941, U-110 attacked the convoy OB-318 east of Cape Farewell and sank Bengore Head and Esmond, but was then captured after being heavy damaged in the counterattack of the escort ships and foundered later. One crew member from Bengore Head (Master Maurice Kennedy) was lost. The master, 35 crew members and four gunners were rescued: 16 survivors by the Norwegian steam merchant Borgfred and landed at Sydney on 18 May and 24 survivors by HMS Aubretia (K 96) (LtCdr V.F. Smith, RNR) and landed at Reykjavik. | ||
