| History | HrMs Java (Kapitein Ter Zee Philippus Bernardus Maria van Straelen) was sunk by Japanese cruisers during the Battle of Java Sea, along with light cruiser De Ruyter and destroyer Kortenaer. The ship sank at 2345 hours on 27 February 1942. 526 died and only 43 survived to be repatriated after the war; amongst those who died was the Commanding officer Straelen Van.
