During the Japanese attack USS Cachalot (Lt.Cdr. Waldeman N. Christensen) was at the Pearl Harbor Navy Yard for a sheduled overhaul. She opened fire on the enemy planes with her machine guns.
12 Jan 1942
With her overhaul completed USS Cachalot (Lt.Cdr. W.N. Christensen) left Pearl Harbor for her first war patrol.
18 Mar 1942
USS Cachalot (Lt.Cdr. W.N. Christensen) conducted reconnaissance of Wake, Eniwetok, Ponape, Truk, Namonuito, and the Hall Islands before she returned to Pearl Harbor on 18 March 1942.
