Allen was decommissioned at New York June 22 1922 and berthed with the reserve fleet until reactivated June 23 1925
After recomissioning USS Allen conducted training cruises out of Washington DC
She was decommissioned again at Philadelphia in March 1928 and berthed with the reserve fleet until recommissioned again on August 23 1940
USS Allen operated along the east coast until transferred to the Pacific on 9 December 1940
USS Allen spent WWII patrolling the Hawaiian Islands. USS Allen was decommissioned for the last time at Philadelphia on October 15 1945
Stricken November 1 1945
Sold 26 September 1946.

During 24/25 March 1944, USS Seadragon (Cdr. R.L. Rutter, USN), conducted exercises off Pearl Harbour together with USS Mitchell (Lt.Cdr. M.S. Erdahl, USNR), USS Florikan (Cdr. G.A. Sharp, USN), USS Allen (Lt.Cdr. H.H. Nielsen, USN), USS Salmon (Cdr. H.K. Nauman, USN) and USS Bang (Cdr. A.R. Gallaher, USN). These exercises included night exercises.

10 Aug 1944
During 10/11 August 1944, USS Skipjack (T/Cdr. R.S. Andrews, USN) and USS Searaven (T/Cdr. M.H. Dry, USN) conducted exercises off Pearl Harbour with USS Burden R. Hastings (Lt.Cdr. E.B. Fay, USNR).

Later USS Seahorse (T/Capt. C.W. Wilkins, USN) and USS Allen (Lt. W.J. Riley, Jr., USNR) before the night exercises commenced.

On the 11th, USS Greiner (T/Lt.Cdr. L.H. Kiser, USN) also joined. (5)

11 Aug 1944
USS Baya (Cdr. A.H. Holtz, USN) conducted exercises off Pearl Harbour together with USS Allen (Lt. W.J. Riley, Jr., USNR), USS Carlson (Lt.Cdr. J.A. Stapleton, USNR), USS Greiner (Lt.Cdr. L.H. Kiser, USN) and USS Hawkbill (Cdr. F.W. Scanland, Jr., USN).

21 Aug 1944

Bodler, USNR), USS Connolly (Lt.Cdr. W.A. Collier, USNR), USS Allen (Lt. J.A. Rowe, USNR) and USS Sea Fox (Cdr. R.C. Klinker, USN). These exercises included night exercises.

11 Apr 1945
USS Bumper (Cdr. J.W. Williams, Jr., USN) conducted exercises off Pearl Harbour together with USS Allen (Lt. J.A. Rowe, USN) and USS Staff (Lt. W.A. Upton, USNR).

3 Jun 1945
USS Angler (Lt.Cdr. H. Bissell, Jr., USNR) and USS Moray (T/Cdr. F.L. Barrows, USN) conducted exercises off Pearl Harbour with USS Burden R. Hastings (Lt. J.W. Stivers, USNR), USS Loeser (Lt.Cdr. J. Proctor, USNR). In the evening USS Allen (Lt. J.A. Rowe, USN) also joined for a few hours.

They remained out for exercises during the night of 3/4 June. In the morning of the 4th, USS Loeser was detached while USS Florikan (T/Lt. D. Hima, USN) and USS Howard (Lt.Cdr. F.W. Diehl, USNR) joined. In the afternoon USS Pruitt (Lt. D.B. Harby, USNR) also joined.

4 Jun 1945
USS Carp (Lt.Cdr. J.L. Hunnicutt, USNR) conducted exercises off Pearl Harbour together with USS Pruitt (Lt. D.B. Harby, USNR), USS Howard (Lt.Cdr. F.W. Diehl, USNR), USS Loeser (Lt.Cdr. J. Proctor, USNR) and USS Allen (Lt. J.A. Rowe, USN).
