Stricken in August, 1944 after a torpedo explosion. Scuttled on 3 May, 1945 at Travemünde. Later raised and wreck broken up.

General notes on this boat

In August 1944 a torpedo exploded in the boat causing extensive damages that took months to repair.

Men lost from U-boats

Unlike many other U-boats, which during their service lost men due to accidents and various other causes, U-1196 did not suffer any casualties (we know of) until the time of her loss.
