Hello dear friends,

Does anybody got (some) names of the crew-list of the British ss PHILOMEL (Capt. Henry Wilson), sunken on 16 September 1918, in convoy, between London and Bordeaux (France) by the UC-88 (Reinhard von Rabenau).

The complement was of 40 units, 26 British, 1 Russian and 13 Belgian seamen.
I am most interested in the “Belgian crew”.

And also in all other Belgian seagoing people on board of (any) ships of the M. Marine in 1914-1918, if available. Any info is welcome.

Thanks a lot,
Best regards,

I collect Canadian medals and have a group to one CPOTEL. Godfrey GALE RCN who was aboard HMS Pascal when it was sunk by a UBoat in the English Channel 17December1916.

I have a significant amount of research on the man and the ship but nothing on the UBoat that sunk this supply ship.

Would your members have any thoughts as to the identity of this UBoat and the details on its type, commander, etc.?
I appreciate any information you can provide.

I am writing my fathers memoirs and have a gap I am trying to close. My father's ship (unknown) was sunk in the northern waters I would assume south of Norway sometime between June - and the end of Dec 1917. He was injured and taken to Norway for treatment. I have idea what the ship was called and he is long since passed away. I would like to isolate to a few ships. It would have been a Dutch ship as he lived in the Netherlands and sailed out of Rotterdam and Vlissigen. I have reviewed all his seaman logs that I can find, unfortunately the earliest is 1919. I have also scoured the web with no success. Uboat.net is a great site I just do not know enough about the waters north of Holland to even guess what ships may have been sunk in that area.

Can anyone help me isolate some potential Dutch ships.

HMS Primula was torpedoed in 1916 off the island of Cerigo, in the med. Previously I was searching for info on HMS Petunia, believing it to be the ship that my grandfather served on. It would seem, however, that the name of the ship was only half remembered by my father, and could well have been HMS Primula, as this is the only ship of that class sunk in the med at that time with a very similar name.
I would be pleased to receive any information anyone might have about this ship, and also the crew names. etc.
Many thanks,

Q Ship Stonecrop v U boat ? 17th Set 1917 (4 replies)

One of my relatives served aboard the Q ship HMS Stonecrop (aka Glenfoyle/Dunlevon/Winona) during 1917. The commander Maurice Blackwood received a DSO and my relative a DSC for an action the ship was involved in on 17th September 1917. On the records this is simply referred to as 'engagement with enemy submarine.'

Some sources I have found say that this was the sinking of U88 under the command of Walter Schweiger. The majority however (including the German account)claim that the U88 was sunk by a mine earlier in the month in the North Sea. If it wasn't U88 that the Stonecrop attacked in the Atlantic off Ireland, does anyone have any idea as to which U boat it may have been?

The ship itself was sunk by 2 torpedoes the following day by U43 commanded by Waldemar Bender, my relative being amongst those killed. This was apparently without warning which would suggest that it had been identified as a Q ship - had it attacked U43 the day before but not sunk it?

Any information gratefully received

I am trying to trace my paternal grandfather, a Lieutenant Hayes RN, who apparently commanded a vessel by the name of 'Petunia' during the first world war, which was sunk by a U Boat. There are records of two vessels of that name being sunk by U boat. One being a merchant vessel the other a fishing vessel. It is concievable that the vessel could have been a conversion for naval use.
Is there any way of tracing the captain and crew of the vessel? My grandfather was apparently not on board when the vessel was hit!
Any help would be gratefully received.

Hi mates,

on May 16th, 1918 UB 64 (v. Schrader) had an encounter with an unknown (British?) submarine but which one...

Here's the extract from the KTB.

The sub was spotted at 7,000 metres and was closing the range. UB 64 opend fire, The sub dived. Soon after a periscope was spotted at 800 metres. UB 64 avoided the attack by altering course and dropping a scuttling charge (used as depth charge!). The unknown sub didn't make any further attack.

Any help is much appreciated.

Thank's

U-Boat Attack on Troopship Northumberland - May 1918 (3 replies)

Hi all,

I am hoping someone can shed some light on the unsuccessful attack on the troopship Northumberland in May 1918. A website claims the following:

Orders were received on May 2, 1918, to entrain for duty overseas, and on the night of May 10, 1918, the 117th Infantry went on board transports at New York. The First and Second Battalions with 20 officers and 1922 enlisted men climbed up the gangplank and onto the HMS Northumberland, and the Third Battalion consisting of 27 officers and 949 enlisted men went aboard the HMS Anselm. There were nine troopships that sailed on the morning of the 11th of May and Captain Blair on board the HMS Northumberland started his voyage across the Atlantic. The Northumberland was a cargo ship owned by the Federal Steam Navigation Company and had for the most part been on the Australia, New Zealand and South Africa route before the war. She was 11,559 gross tons and built in 1915 and scrapped in 1951. The 1,942 men of the 117th Infantry were the only men on board the Northumberland that trip so there must not have been much space for troops as being that she was a cargo ship accommodations on board were crude as the men were likely bunked out in the holds of the ship. Some ten days later, after an attack by submarines off the Irish Coast, in which the convoy escaped without loss, the HMS Northumberland docked at Liverpool, England, where special trains carried the 117th Infantry straight through London to Folkestone.

This is taken from:
[freepages.military.rootsweb.ancestry.com]

So, the attack would have been between the 11th and the 21st. Given that the Northumberland was involved in a collision with the collier Cliffburn on the 18th (with the Cliffburn going to the bottom with all hands), the attack may not have been on that day. If anyone can perhaps ID the u-boat that may have been involved, that would be great.

Thanks,
