Looking to determine what boat ObGefr. Ludwig Beck, listed with the Volksbund, was lost with on 8.5.1941. They quoted his name as being at Moltenort, however I have not been able to confirm this. Only U-110 was lost in this time frame, yet there is no Beck on the crew list at ubootwaffe, nor on U-65, lost in April. I have a death notice with photo of a Maschinengefreiter Ludwig Beck, dated 26 Mai 1941, so am wondering if this is the same man. Year of birth is the same; 1919. Perhaps someone can confirm? Thanks in advance.

Ive been pointed in this direction via another forum. Ive scouted this forum in the past and found it extremely useful. Had a few family members who were involved in the Merchant Navy, one of which was on the Empire Bison. Currently looking at a freinds relative, a Samuel Bowen who was on board HMS Versatile. He was an Ordnance Engineer and was lost at sea. Not through any apparent enemy action. Can anyone shed any light on this?

Werner,

I am new also. I tried replying to your post but it did not take. Anyway, I have first hand info I think you would like to follow up on.

In 1995 I was in the town of Jeremie, Haiti. In a V shaped cove 2 Km West, there is what I think is a German Uboat. At low tide the the conning tower is about 2 feet out of the water. A good portion of the hull is buried in the sand. I snorkeled it many times, it is in about 30 feet of water. If I remember correctly, it is no more than 300 meters from shore.

Go to google maps and you can find that cove. I've tried to see if I can see the sub, but I can't. It must have been high tide when the picture was taken. I can promise you it is there! Jeremie is located on the North side of the Southern claw. There is a road that loosely follows the coast. Look 2 Km West and you will find that V shaped cove. When you drive that road and as you come to the top of the cove, you can see the waves break around the conning tower. It is a bit of a hike to the bottom, but I don't think you'll mind.

I was christened aboard HMS Zest on February 10th, 1946 by the Ship's
chaplain. The upturned ship's bell served as the Font. My father,
Cdr. Robin Jenks, was the Commanding Officer at the time, I believe.
I have a photograph and an oil painting of the ship, and several
others, including HM submarine H32, that he commanded during World War II.
He died on Feb. 25, 1982, just before the St. Nazaire Reunion which he
had so hoped to attend. I am not sure of the dates he was CO and
would love to learn more about that time.
I have downloaded some information from the internet, but I'd like to research a more anecdotal format. I typed a manuscript for a book he was writing about his War experiences which, sadly, I could not find after his death.
I am so proud of him and the thousands of others who went to any lengths to maintain our right to freedom, then and now...
Sincerely,

Trying to identify U-Boat capture photos (2 replies)

I am still trying to identify and date several b&w images of what appears to be the capture of a U-Boat. The are no notes on the photos. There are fair reasons they were shot in the North Atlantic, from a British vessel. Speculation, so far, is that the boat may be U-39 or U-606. 4-5 photos depict different views of what may be the same action. 3 photos show a ship's longboat being lowered from one destroyer and rowing to a second ship (type unknown). The most intriguing image is that of a longboat in the davits with a rather disgruntled gentleman standing in it. He is wearing a white cap, white sweater and life jacket. The hat and sweater are very similar to those I've seen on U-Boat captains. The life jacket has been said to be British, but I cannot confirm that.

The British destroyers identified, so far, in this series of photographs, are the Faulknor and H-88 Havelock. I am most interested in the Havelock and the U-Boat's identity. The only Havelock records I have found claim that the boats sunk, in the actions in which Havelock participated, did not surface and there was only one survivor from the lot. I will admit that the photos may be a mixture of different actions, although the processing and printing processes seem to be the same.

Can anyone shed light on this little mystery?

I collect Great War gallantry medals and memorial crosses/plaques/scrolls to Canadians.

I have in my collection a group of medals to one Ldg.Smn. William LAURIE RCNVR who, although shown on the books of HMCS Brandon, was aboard a British merchant ship which was sunk in late January 1942. Documents from Archives Canada state "Missing on War Service. He was borne for passage to Canada in a British merchant ship which sailed from a United Kingdom port about 7January1942 and has been missing since 24January1942. While this rating is listed as missing it is impossible to make an estimeate as to his chances of survival" In the event those chances were zero!

As virtually all my research focuses on Army awards, the Navy items are a mystery to me. Would your members be able to assist with information relative to: what convoy, if any, would have sailed about this time/ what British merchant ships were sunk in this January 1942 time frame in the Atlantic / possible UBoats active in the Atlantic at this time who had sunk a British merchant ship(likely a large list)

I would appreciate any information you may be able to provide.

Thank you.
On July 7, 1942 freighter SS Oklahoman (Not to be confused with the Battleship USS Oklahoma) Sank 1nm West of Dassen Island, South Africa. After a review of the database here, it does not appear that any U-boats were in the vicinity at the time,
so was this a simple case of bad weather, human error, mechanical issue or something else?

The area looks pretty treacherous, so would this have been the normal route or does anyone know why she would have been there or have any more information on the circumstances of her loss?

I am searching information about a missing U-boats in the bay of Mochima, Venezuela (coordinates 10.21N – 64.21W)
11 years ago I lived in Venezuela, and there I heard a story about jack Cousteau in the seventies visited the Mochima bay in the eastern Venezuela.
There he located a German WW2 submarine. jack Cousteau found the submarine with the help of local a Venezuelan diver.

This summer I was back in Venezuela and visited Mochima. There I looked up the local diver who found the submarine, and asked him about the story.
He told me that the story I heard 11 years before is true, and jack Cousteau found the submarine wreck with the help of technical equipment he had on board his ship.

Furthered more he told me that in the end of the war there was a naval battle with two small German submarines and a British warship, in the Caribbean sea in front of the entrance to the bay of Mochima.
At least one of the submarines sailed into the bay, and all the men escaped and deserted.
Some of the crew members went back to Germany after the war, but others stayed in Venezuela and, he told me that some of them are still living in the area.

I am thinking about making a television documentary about the story, but I need to know more about the whole story before I can start up the project.

Can you help me with any information about the story?

I am trying to find out the number of the U-Boat that was sunk in the Baltic during ww2(Not sure if during training or by enemy action) that was salvaged and recommissioned? I think the whole original crew were killed. Must have been quite horrible to be the 2nd crew with so many ghosts aboard.

I have a cousin who spent the war as a very young evacuee in America and returned on HMS Patroller, an escort carrier.
She joined convoy CU 69 which sailed from New York on 10 May 1945, arriving at Liverpool on 20 May - according to [www.convoyweb.org.uk]
My cousin vividly remembers that just outside Liverpool HMS Patroller met a U-boat and took her surrender.
Is there any way of verifying this incident and discovering the identity of the U-boat?
(Well, I know Patroller’s logbook is in the NA – but it will be a long time before I get over there again.)
(Allgemeine Gerätesoll)I found between the chinaware or porcelain inventory green circles dishes indicated to be used in the Oberfeldwebel table service and brown circle dishes to be used in officers table service.
I know there are other Kriegsmarine porcelain designs with different colours like red circles or other colour combinations. Are those other types related to different table services? I couldn´t find any Kriegsmarine china classification related to colour. Any help would be of great value.
Looking at this metric (percentage of successful merchant sailings), which were the worst months for the Allies? (I know which months had the highest absolute tonnage and ships sunk.)

HI all,

there is something wrong about the sequence of events leading to the sinking of U 585:
According to all sources I have consulted, on 24 March, 1942 U-585 was attacked by 3 enemy ships with depth charges, and was forced to return to base (Kirkenes) due to the resulting extensive damage.
Yet, she sailed for another patrol on 27/3 and was mined and sunk 30/3 off Kola Inlet.
My question, therefore, is how could the extensive damage have been repaired so quickly within 72 hours? Does anyone have additional info on the nature of the damage sustained or is there some mix-up with another boat?

Thanks, regards,

Regenbogen (no replies)

Can anyone clarify the following concerning Regenbogen, please?

It is commonly stated – as, indeed, it is elsewhere on this site – that on 4 May 1945, when Dönitz was obliged to cancel Regenbogen in order to meet the conditions of the partial surrender, some 200 U-boat captains scuttled anyway, believing that that was what Dönitz would have wished, or that it was a case of straightforward defiance by captains who simply could not bring themselves to hand over their commands to the enemy.

However, Niestlé shows (in German U-boat Losses During World War II), that 86 of the total of around 200 U-boats were scuttled from 1 May to 3 May, i.e, before the surrender was signed.

Now, the earliest reference I can find ordering the execution of Regenbogen is not until the early hours of the 5 May – i.e., before the surrender terms had even been dictated, let alone come into effect – when OKM ordered that wherever possible all U-boats were to depart immediately for Norway, and that any unable to sail were to carry out Regenbogen. Eight minutes later, however, this was cancelled by Feldmarschall Keitl when he signalled that no scuttling or demolition was to be carried out.

So, if the earliest reference to executing Regenbogen is not until 5 May, why did the scuttling begin on 1 May, and on what authority?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
