Hello all:

Has anyone seen this old WWII movie starring James Cagney and his OSS gang?

A scene at the beginning takes the viewer to a U.S. naval depot where MK 14
torpedoes are being worked. Two "OSS trainees" photograph a MK 6 magnetic-influence exploder mechanism on a work table and next to it is a MK 14 3A torpedo turned bottom-side up showing its exploder cavity in the warhead. It's the first time I've ever seen a MK 6 exploder mechanism in a regular "civilian" movie.

Comments?

Later,

A short time after Das Boot came out in the USA, a humorous tribute to the film appeared just before the bridge that leads to New Jersey Transit's Hoboken tunnels. There is a very old iron tank near the tracks, which someone-- possibly NJT employees-- decorated as a funny little submarine. It has a periscope and a deck gun, constructed out of pipes and various bits of junk, and at one point, there was a mannequin's head complete with white cap, on the "conning tower." "Das Binky" is stencilled on the side. It has proved remarkably durable over the years, as this photo, taken a few days ago, shows.

A major Hollywood motion picture will start filming late this summer on the U-505 crew's internment at Camp Ruston, Louisiana.

The film is actually about Gene Moore, a young baseball prodigy drafted by the Brooklyn Dodgers whose career was interrupted by Pearl Harbor and WWII. He ended up on a Navy baseball team entertaining the troops prior to D-Day. Once the European battles started in earnest, the team was sent back to the U.S. They happened to be available to serve as guards for the U-505 crew on its journey from Norfolk to Camp Ruston. While at Camp Ruston, Moore taught some of the U-boat crew to play baseball and that's what the bulk of the movie is about.

For more information, see my friend Gary Moore's website on his book: www.playingwiththeenemy.com

The movie will have BIG stars in it. I can post the names once the official announcement is made. It is produced by Gerald R. Molen, who did Jurassic Park, Schindler's List, Rain Main and others.

I am researching a book on the U-505's time at Camp Ruston so any info or ideas are appreciated.

Does anyone know if there's an mp3 available anywhere of the song, it is listed in Uboat Songs in the Special Sections area as Title Unknown, with the refrain containing the words Angriff, ran, versenken? In the movie some guys were singing it when Lt. Werner comes out of the head, I believe it was the time they hauled Thomsen off of the floor.
I would really like to know what the whole song sounds like.

Hi all,

I saw the movie trailier this past weekend for "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" starring Brad Pitt; of note to folks in this forum is a scene where, in WWII (I think), Brad is on what looks like a merchant ship that runs over a u-boat in stormy seas. Anyone else see this or know more about the sequence?

Thanks,
Neither movie, as you all know, unfortunately have German subtitles, and I must have spent at least an hour on google and everywhere else searching for them. I would greatly appreciate any help, many thanks! -Patrick

Das Boot - losing weight (6 replies)

In the film Das Boot, while being sunk at Gibraltar, the crew needs to blow the water out of the boat to get it lighter and finally ascend to the surface again. Now today I had the crazy idea that they could have launched their torpedoes (12 torpedoes at a weight of 1.5 tons each, that is 18 tons in total) to lose additional weight.

Sounds crazy, and probably is impossible due to technical limitations. But I wanted to know exactly, and thats why i registered on this forum to ask if any of you guys knows the answer.

Possible explanations I came up with:

- 18 tons is not sizeable compared to the weight of 1000 tons of the u-boat, so it wouldnt have much effect

- Its technically impossible to launch a torpedo at a depth of 280 meters (water pressure) from a type VII boat

- Its too dangerous to launch a torpedo while the submarine is sitting on ground

Thanks for you comments!

Hi:

Can anyone tell me what the sub used for the U-Boat was in this movie? It certainly wasn't a U-Boat per se. It looks kind of fiftyish and similar to a British Oberon or a US Tang with a wintergarten (or bandstand if you will) added on.

Also, what was the camouflage used on the sub for? Was it to blend in to the water or was it for arctic waters with ice floating? Was it realistic? At any rate it was certainly interesting camo.

"Murphy's War"' is a great movie in my estimation and I was very intrigued with the German sub even though I knew it was not a real U-boat. Thanking you in advance for any feedback regarding this.

Friends,

In the opening bar scene the 2WO tells Werner:

"Prosit, Lieutenant. To the Freichor Tonitz."

They then cock their arms at right angles and drain their glasses. I was wondering what the toast means and the significance of the arm positions. All the best.
