<HTML>Hi All,
According to W. Bickel (confirmed by P.Labs and several other survivors) of U175, a depth of 320m was reached in an uncontrolled dive during a D/C attack by USCGC Spencer on 4/17/43. Most instruments were smashed, except the pressure gauge, which Bickel kept reporting to all in the Zentrale during the dive. Final reading before ascending for the last time was 32 atmospheres =320m or 1050 feet! Sinking boat was despatched by gun fire, with 13 kia and 41 survivors, of which less than a dozen are still alive today.
Believe this to be the deepest dive of a German sub during WW2. Think the deepest confirmed dive by a type VIIc was abt 285-295m by a boat in the Med. Sorry forgot which one. Rgds, RB</HTML>
