Hi All!
Currently you can't visit the U-534. You can drive past of course, but you will only be able to see her from the roadside. I was privileged to have a last tour on her a month ago. Yes it is a shame that she will be cut up, but there are no real alteratives. She has been granted a further 15+ years of life and she could always be stitched back together at a later date. Hopefully now she will be looked after a little better, so no further deterioration will take place (she has really suffered over that past decade or so).
Since Merseytravel have taken over the reigns, the site has been bursting with activity and contractors are working very hard on both her and the new Visitors Centre.
There is a little more info on this on my site: [www.atlantik-pirat.com] (follow the U-534 link). This will be updated as things happen.
There has been a lot of work carried out on the hull over the past month and she is now ready to be treated with preserver and primed. The cutting (into four sections), is due to be carried out in mid January. She will then be moved down the river to her new location. There is only a very small window in which this can happen.
The new Visitor Centre is hopefully going to open in the summer. I have seen the plans and it looks fantastic!
Please give me a shout if you need any more info..
